When it comes to using a MiniMag™ magnetic box to hide your spare keychain or key fob under your car (we call them "mag boxes"), there are limitations to consider. Proper maintenance and placement are key (no pun intended) to using a Monster Magnetics® mag box successfully and without loss or damage (thereby never locking yourself out of your vehicle again!).
Where Do I Put It?
Once you put your key, keychain, or key fob (or any or all of the above) into the mag box and climb under the vehicle, where exactly do you put it? Is it safe to put it on the frame of the vehicle? Can I mount it on the gas tank? What happens if I get too close to the exhaust system?
We Got You Covered
To answer these questions (and more) and to help our customers prevent problems that come with improper placement, all MiniMag™ mag boxes now come with our Magnetic Case Placement Guide(FREE download - follow the link printed on the product packaging).
This guide contains important information that you should know prior to deploying one of our magnetic boxes on the underside of a vehicle (and specific instructions to help you not lose GPS and cellular signals if you're using a mag box to house a live GPS tracker).
Another Consideration: Range-Dependent Auto Unlock
Does your vehicle and key fob have range-dependent automatic unlock capability enabled? If so, you'll want to disable this feature in your vehicle's settings prior to placing your spare key fob under your car.
It survived a New England winter, dry and unscathed.
3 months after placing it on the frame of my truck I got locked out. It was right where I left it, 2 thousand miles ago on the frame of the truck. It was caked with road salt and mud but the contents were clean and dry. Couldn't ask for more.
